Welcome, welcome! It’s time for another #elevEIGHT post, where I highlight my favorite 8 things in that month’s category. This month it’s Sports Nutrition.
Now, keep in mind that I’m actually somewhat of a purist when it comes to using sports nutrition products. I really believe there are a lot of “extra’s” out there that just aren’t necessary to fuel our bodies. (And sometimes even detrimental, as some of them can be loaded with sugar or weird lab-concocted chemicals.) So some of these sports nutrition “products” may be a little out of the box for you!
With that being said, let’s jump in to some nutrition products that WILL safely, cleanly boost your fitness results!
- Coconut Oil: Yep, coconut oil and it’s 80 gazillion health benefits INCLUDES the fitness perks of sustained energy (without blood sugar spikes) and fat-burning capacities. It also leads to immediate improvements in brain function, which doesn’t hurt a bit when you’re using the fit lifestyle to elevate your work performance! Try stirring a spoonful into your morning coffee.
- Garden of Life Raw Protein: My husband has sensitivities to whey, and I honestly don’t love how most whey proteins taste. I’m dedicated to living a conscious, environmentally-gentle lifestyle, too, so whenever I can easily find a good vegan product I try to go vegan over dairy. (But the vegan food industry still has some ground to cover when it comes to cheese, in my opinion!) This vegan protein is awesome because it is chalk-full of real, whole organic food sources like amaranth, quinoa, and lentils. Because it’s so natural, I add either a frozen banana to my smoothie or else some stevia to give it a little extra boost of sweetness
- Vega Sports Gels: First, a disclaimer. Most of us don’t need endurance gels for our usual workouts. Even if you’re training for a 10K, you’re fine with just water and maybe a post-workout snack or electrolyte replacement. But if you’re going to be running for more than 60 minutes (say, if you’re training for a half-marathon), then try Vega Endurance Gels which don’t contain any high-fructose corn syrup or maltodextrin. I think they taste like Fig Newtons, too, which is an added bonus!
- Coffee: No, I don’t want you downing it all day long. But 1-2 cups of coffee before your workout is a proven endurance booster. Just make sure you flavor it in a smart way–cinnamon, almond or soy milk, some coconut oil, etc.–rather than overpowering the health benefits with cream and sugar.
- Peppermint Oil: Peppermint is a proven energy-booster. Add a drop of food-grade peppermint oil into your water bottle before a workout. It tastes awesome and is also refreshing if you’re exercising outdoors in warm weather.
- Lemons and Limes: These cheery fruits contain natural electrolytes such as potassium, and also help aid in proper digestion which is very important for both fat-loss as well as reducing toxins in the body and maintaining a proper metabolism.
- Matcha Love Green Tea Shots: Caffeine boosts workout performance, causing you to dig a little deeper in your next round of weight-lifting or Zumba! Green tea also has definite weight-loss and antioxidant benefits, making it a win-win! I love these cute little canned green teas. I get mine from Whole Foods, but you can also order them online here.
- Filtered Water: Nature still knows best. If there’s a single thing I can tell you to do to start to improve your nutrition, it’s to drink more clean water! Filtered is best, for sure, to make sure you’re not adding yucky chemicals into the mix. Use a Brita filter in your fridge, or one of their water bottles with a built-in filter.
